iCopyright Surpasses One Million Instant Licenses in 2008
Number of daily licenses double to more than 10,000

SEATTLE, Washington, October 22, 2008—iCopyright announced today that its automated content licensing system has transacted more than one million instant licenses year-to-date. The one millionth license was transacted on Thursday, October 9th at 11:03am CDT. The license was for five ad-supported photocopies of an article from Chromatography Today, a publication of Advanstar Communications.

“The death of copyright in the digital age has been greatly exaggerated,” said Mike O’Donnell, Founder & CEO of iCopyright. “One million instant licenses within a single year is a world record. The number of daily licenses obtained by Internet users doubled from 5,000 to more than 10,000 in just 9 months. What we have witnessed in the last few years is a dramatic increase in voluntary compliance. This milestone shows that people will respect a publisher’s copyrights if the permissions process is instantaneous. The days of publishers handling copyright permissions manually, or on an ad hoc basis, are over.”

Online users obtain free permissions and fee-based licenses by clicking on iCopyright’s Email, Print, Save, Post, and License links located on publisher websites. iCopyright transacts the license and delivers the content instantly in the format desired by the user. The system also tracks the downstream distribution of the licensed content so that recipients can verify that the sender has a valid license to be using and sharing the content. The iCopyright service also enables viral marketing and distribution, since every recipient of a licensed article or photo is invited to obtain additional rights to use and share the content.

“iCopyright has done for information content what iTunes did for music,” O’Donnell added.
